How many times have you heard that Latinos should have their own Mad TV, SaturdayNight Live, or In Living Color? Yes, we have heard this for decades.
In the tradition of Mad TV and SNL we now have a new show #LocosYContentos, which actually premiered last year on Estrella TV National Network. The rating for the pilot were so strong that six more specials have been ordered by the network.
Adding to the show’ uniqueness is that it’s first Spanish language stand comedy show, nestled between sketches cleverly written about the American Latino experience, to air on a U.S. Spanish-language broadcast network headlined by icons in the comedy world on both Spanish-language and English-language TV. Each episode will be headlined by a different celebrity host. It’s been a long time coming and actress/comedienne Kiki Melendez and Estrella TV network have created this groundbreaking show. “We need to have a launching pad for Latinos in America, this is the most important reason I am truly grateful to have this opportunity,” said Melendez.
Just in time for May sweeps, Melendez brings together an impressive line up of comedians headlined by Carlos Mencia, Paul Rodriguez and Julio Sabala and 12 other comedians to tape the live performances which will air on Estrella TV. The taping, which is free and open to the public, will be taped on April 1st 3pm, 5pm and 7pm at The Montalban Theater, 1615 Vine Street Hollywood, CA 90028.

United our nations through laughter could be the tag line for #LocosYContentos as this show brings together Latinos from the U.S., Latin America and even the mother country, Spain. Representing Honduras is U.S. raised Carlos Mencia; Mexico is represented by U.S. raised Paul Rodriguez, Macario Brujo, Frank Hevia, and Pinchi Peter. From the Dominican Republic are Julio Sabala, Carlos Sanchez and Jochi Jochi. Puerto Ricans hailing from New York are Mark Viera, Angel Lozada, and Joey Vega; Cuba is represented are Zulema Cruz and Alexis Valdez; Colombia’s top comedian Piter Alberio; and Flipy joins the show all the way from Spain.
They said it couldn’t be done, but #LocosYContentos is uniting Latinos, proving it canbe done and it will be broadcast nationally on Estrella TV. In the future it is Melendez’s dream to be able to bring celebrities like Andy Garcia, Wilmer Valderrama, Antonio Banderas and Luis Guzman as celebrity hosts, much like when Al Pacino hosted SNL.
“It’s a great feeling when comedy icons such as Julio Sabala, Paul Rodriguez and Carlos Mencia get what we are trying to do for our Latinos In America and they support us by agreeing to headline the back to back shows, Latinos helping Latinos it’s a beautiful thing” said Melendez
It’s a dream that has been percolating for a while in Melendez’s head, the idea of a Spanish language sketch comedy show, and it almost happened at Unvision. She sold them a pilot and it was scheduled to go forward with 26 episodes. Unfortunately, right as as it was ready to go into production there was a management change at the network and the new regime.
Howverm Estrella Network TV who has been at the forefront of producing shows locally and producing content for U.S. Hispanic audiences, greenlit the pilot of #LocosYContentos last year and when they saw the response to its initial airing, they decided it had to be added to their original programming line up. A great fit for the network.
“We are kicking off the most amazing line-up in the world!” said #LocosYContentos producer Estela Sainz. Aditional producers include Robert Almonte and Ricardo Ruiz.U
